DIY Skin-Care

Have a go at making your own - it’s cheap and eco friendly!

Cucumber Juice Toner

Cucumber juice is softening and refreshing, no wonder it’s used in so many skincare products!

  1. Cut up half a cucumber into small chunks and throw into a blender. Zap it until all the chunks are gone.
  2. Pour into a sieve to strain the juice and get rid of any lumpy bits.
  3. After you have washed your face, wipe the juice over with cotton wool.
  4. Store in the fridge and use for up to 3 days.

Face Scrub

Raid your kitchen cupboards for Porridge Oats and Caster Sugar and you’re sorted!

  1. Take a handful of Porridge Oats and grind in a blender.
  2. Add a teaspoon of Caster Sugar and blend together.
  3. Taking a small amount of the blended powdery mix, add a splash of water until it makes a paste (like Ready Brek or Porridge does!).
  4. Rub the mixture over your face, concentrating on the T-zone. Rinse with warm water.

Tip- You can also turn your normal face wash into a scrub by adding a table spoon full of sugar!

For Dry Skin- Banana Face Mask

Banana is really soothing and cool on dry skin!

  1. Mash half a ripe banana, and then add a tablespoonful of thick cream and a tablespoonful of honey.
  2. Smooth it over your face and leave for 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

For Oily Skin- Strawberry Face Mask

Strawberries have natural acids that help to brighten dull skin!

  1. Mash together 3 large strawberries. If you want the mixture a bit thicker, you can also add a tablespoonful of honey.
  2. Smooth onto your face and leave for about 3 minutes, and then wash off with warm water.

*Strawberries can be quite acidic, so if your skin starts to feel tingly, wash off straight away. Never leave on for more than 4 minutes!*

For Normal or Combination skin – Avocado Face Mask

The natural oils in Avocados make them moisturising on the skin

  1. Mash up half a ripe avocado until it is the smoothest you can get it. *Make sure the Avocado is ripe, otherwise it wont mash however hard you try!*
  2. Massage the mixture onto your face and leave for 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. *Don’t panic! The mixture starts off green but soon turns brown on contact with the air*

Get rid of Spots- the Natural way!

Follow these top tips recommended by the holistic therapists at Neal’s Yard Remedies...

  • Keep skin clean! Wash your face at least once a day to get rid of grime and dirt.
  • Steam your face once a week to help keep the pores free from oil and dirt build up.
  • Only exfoliate once a week – any more than this is harsh on the skin.
  • Dab spots with tea-tree oil or witch-hazel on a cotton bud.
  • Relax! Stress makes spots worse so it’s important to chill out.
  • Eat healthily- unfortunately sugar and artificial additives aren’t good for your skin, so make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg!
